A note from Erin

When you invest in a vintage bag, you’re not just buying an accessory. You’re becoming the next caretaker of something that has already lived a full life and deserves to keep going.

The good news is that caring for vintage Louis Vuitton is simpler than most people think. You don’t need an elaborate routine or expensive salon treatments. You just need the right products, a little consistency, and the confidence to actually use your bag.

These are the products I personally use and recommend, the ones that have earned a permanent place in my bag care routine after years of sourcing, cleaning, and loving vintage pieces.

The Golden Rule

A little care goes a long way.

Vintage bags are built to last. With the right products and a consistent routine, your bag will only get more beautiful over time. The patina, the wear, the character, these are features, not flaws.

The Essentials

General Bag Care Tips

The basics that apply to every vintage bag in your collection.

Vintage Louis Vuitton bags stored and cared for properly by It Must Be Loved

01   Storage

Protect it when you’re not wearing it

  • Store in a breathable dust bag in a cool, dry place. Avoid plastic covers which trap moisture and accelerate deterioration.
  • Stuff it lightly with acid-free tissue paper or old t-shirts to help the bag maintain its shape between uses.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure causes canvas fading and vachetta leather to dry out prematurely.
  • Store upright when possible. Laying a structured bag on its side over time can distort its shape.
Never store in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container. Leather needs to breathe.

02   General Care

Day-to-day habits that make a difference

  • Clean gently using a soft, damp cloth or 100% water wipes to wipe the canvas exterior, then dry with a microfibre cloth.
  • For deeper cleaning, use Apple Care Leather Cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, alcohol-based products, and anything not formulated for luxury leather.
  • Avoid overloading your bag. Overfilling strains the leather handles, tabs, and canvas and causes premature wear.
  • Protect from prolonged moisture and heat. If your bag gets wet, gently pat dry with a soft cloth, never rub.
  • Rotate your bags regularly. Using the same bag every day accelerates wear in the same areas.
With gentle handling and regular maintenance, your vintage treasure will remain a timeless classic.

Specific Care

Caring for Monogram Canvas

Everything you need to know about Louis Vuitton’s iconic coated canvas and vachetta leather trim.

Understanding Vachetta Leather

The natural, untreated leather trim on Louis Vuitton bags, the handles, straps, tabs, and piping, is called vachetta. It is intentionally left unfinished, which means it is sensitive to oils, sunlight, humidity, and water.

Over time, vachetta develops a patina that deepens from its original pale honey colour to a rich caramel or deep tan. This is not damage. This is the natural aging process, and it is one of the most beautiful things about owning a vintage piece. Embrace it.

The key is protecting it from sudden exposure, a splash of rain, direct sunlight for long periods, or contact with oils from your hands or products. A little mindfulness goes a long way.

03   Monogram Bag Care

Specific tips for your LV Monogram

  • Avoid excess moisture. Keep your bag dry and away from direct water. If it gets wet, gently pat dry with a soft cloth and allow to air dry naturally.
  • Handle vachetta with clean hands. Oils from your skin can transfer to the leather and create uneven darkening over time.
  • Clean the canvas with a soft damp cloth or 100% water wipes. For deeper cleaning, Apple Care Leather Cleaner applied with a soft cloth is my top recommendation.
  • Condition the vachetta periodically with a leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking. A little goes a long way.
  • Store in its dust bag away from direct sunlight to prevent canvas fading and vachetta from drying out.
  • Don’t overfill. It strains the leather handles and canvas and causes premature wear at stress points.
The patina your vachetta develops over time is a testament to the bag’s history. It is uniquely yours. Embrace it.

Wear It. Love It. Use It.

Your vintage bag is more than your newest companion. It is a piece of history with stories to tell.

Don’t let it sit on a shelf. Wear it with confidence, love its character, and use it as it was meant to be used. Every mark and every deepening of patina is a testament to its journey, making it uniquely yours.

Celebrate its timeless charm and let each day add a new chapter to its story.
