The LOVED Guide to Buying Vintage Right: Part 3 Hardware & Details

Hardware & Details

Where craftsmanship
reveals itself

Erin from It Must Be Loved examining vintage Louis Vuitton hardware and details

A note from Erin

If the interior tells the story, the hardware reveals the quality. This is one of the most overlooked parts of a vintage bag, but it is where craftsmanship truly shows.

Hardware is one of the most telling details of a vintage piece. It tells you how the bag was made, how it was used, and how well it was cared for. In many cases, this is where vintage truly stands apart from modern production, because details matter and in vintage, they last.

In Part 3 of the LOVED Guide, we are looking closely at:

  • What authentic vintage hardware should feel like
  • How it naturally ages over time
  • What to look for when assessing condition

Because in vintage, the smallest details often say the most.

Hardware & Details

The checkpoints most buyers overlook, and why they matter more than you think.

Vintage Hardware = Real Brass

Many vintage Louis Vuitton bags feature solid brass hardware, not plated, not hollow. Over time, this develops a natural patina. You may see darkening, tarnish, and slight dullness. This is completely normal and expected.

Why it matters: Solid brass is durable, long-lasting, and restorable. Unlike modern plated hardware, it does not chip or peel. The weight alone tells you something real is there.

The heft of vintage hardware is one of the clearest signs you are holding something genuinely well made.

01   Patina vs Problem

What is normal and what is not

Good patina on vintage Louis Vuitton brass hardware showing even tarnish and natural aging

✔   Normal Aging

  • Even tarnish across all hardware
  • Soft, warm darkening
  • Slight surface wear from use
  • Adds character and authenticity
Green corrosion and damage on vintage bag hardware indicating neglect or moisture exposure

✘   Red Flags

  • Green corrosion buildup
  • Flaking or pitting on the surface
  • Deep rust-like damage
  • May indicate neglect or moisture exposure
Not all discolouration is damage. Even tarnish is part of what makes vintage beautiful. Green corrosion is not.

02   Zippers & Function

Always check the zipper

✔   Good Signs

  • Smooth and strong movement
  • Consistent when opening and closing
  • Pulls glide without force

Vintage LV zippers may feel firmer than modern ones. That is quality, not a flaw.

✘   Watch For

  • Catching or resistance mid-pull
  • Misalignment on the track
  • Loose or weak zipper pull
A zipper tells you a lot about the life of a bag. It should feel solid and move with intention.

03   Engravings & Details

Look closely. These reflect craftsmanship and help confirm authenticity.

✔   Good Signs

  • Clean, crisp engravings
  • Balanced, centered logos
  • Consistent hardware tone throughout

✘   Be Cautious Of

  • Faded or sloppy stamping
  • Inconsistent markings across pieces
  • Lightweight feel on hardware
Small details matter more than you think. These are the details that separate authentic craftsmanship from imitation.

Can Hardware Be Cleaned?

Sunshine Polishing Cloths

Gentle enough to clean without over-stripping. My go-to for brass hardware on vintage pieces.

Brasso Metal Polish

For deeper restoration. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and buff gently. Less is more.

Yes, and often beautifully. Clean lightly, keep some patina for character, and you will restore shine without losing the vintage feel.

Hardware Checklist

Before you buy, confirm all four:

  • Solid feel, not lightweight
  • Smooth, consistent zipper function
  • Even patina across all hardware
  • Clean, crisp engravings

These details are what set vintage apart. If they pass, you are holding something special.

From My Experience

One of the reasons I love sourcing vintage is the hardware. It is heavier, stronger, and made to last in a way you just do not see as often today.

When I pick up a vintage piece and feel the weight of the zipper pull, I know immediately. That is one of the clearest signs you are holding something well made.
